Suzhou was founded more than 2,500 years ago and is the birthplace of Wu culture. Classical gardens, riverside homes, Kunqu opera and Pingtan, and silk embroidery together sketch the elegant character of this "paradise on earth," making it a top choice for inbound visitors to experience Jiangnan culture.

Suzhou Travel Guide

Suzhou was founded more than 2,500 years ago and is the birthplace of Wu culture. It is famous for its Jiangnan style of "small bridges over flowing streams and white walls with dark tiles." Its classical gardens are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and intangible cultural heritages such as Kunqu opera, pingtan, embroidery, and kesi silk weaving continue to be passed down. Gardens lie within the city and waters lie beyond the gardens, making it ideal for slow, careful appreciation.

Suzhou is located in the core of the Yangtze River Delta, close to Shanghai, and can be reached by high-speed rail in about half an hour. It is an ideal stop for linking together a Jiangnan itinerary after entering China, and it is also convenient for extending trips to water towns such as Zhouzhuang and Tongli.

Must-Visit Attractions

Humble Administrator's Garden — one of China's four great gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, centered on water with scattered pavilions; Lingering Garden — known for its ingenious architectural layout, with the Cloud-Capped Peak as its treasure; Lion Grove Garden — a maze of Taihu stone rockeries full of fun; Master of the Nets Garden — the ultimate small garden, with evening garden gatherings offering a distinctive charm; Tiger Hill — known as "the finest scenic spot in Wu," with the thousand-year-old leaning Huqiu Pagoda standing there; Hanshan Temple — famous because of the Tang poem line "outside Gusu City, Hanshan Temple"; Suzhou Museum — a blend of modern architecture designed by I. M. Pei and the cultural lineage of Wu; Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street — historic districts living along the river, combining water lanes, painted boats, and bustling local life; Jinji Lake — the city skyline of modern Suzhou.

Local Cuisine

Suzhou-style dishes (squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, sizzling eel in hot oil, cherry pork), Suzhou-style noodle soups (Azao noodles, Fengzhen large pork noodles), pan-fried buns, crab shell pastry, osmanthus sugar porridge, fermented rice cakes, the Three Whites of Taihu Lake (whitefish, white shrimp, silverfish), and Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs (in autumn).

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May), when the gardens are lush with flowers and trees, and autumn (September–November), with clear skies, fat crabs, and yellow chrysanthemums, are both the best seasons; the plum rain season and midsummer are relatively hot and humid, while winter is cooler but has fewer tourists.

Transportation Guide

Suzhou Station and Suzhou North Station have high-speed rail connections to Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and other places; the city's metro network covers major attractions, and the old city is suitable for walking and cycling; access from Shanghai Hongqiao or Pudong Airport is very convenient.

Suggested Itinerary

Classic two-day tour: Day 1, visit the Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou Museum, and Lion Grove Garden, stroll along Pingjiang Road in the afternoon, and explore Shantang Street at night; Day 2, climb Tiger Hill, visit Hanshan Temple, and in the afternoon head to Zhouzhuang or Tongli water town. A three-day tour can add the Lingering Garden, Master of the Nets Garden, and the Kunqu Opera Training Institute.

Travel Tips

For popular gardens, it is advisable to book in advance or enter as early as possible to avoid crowds; the old city's streets and lanes are suitable for walking, so wear comfortable shoes; bring an umbrella in the rainy spring, and take sun protection and mosquito precautions in summer.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Experiences

In the early morning, go to the Master of the Nets Garden or the Garden of Cultivation to see morning light falling on the lattice windows; in the afternoon, listen to a piece of soft Wu dialect at a pingtan hall on Pingjiang Road; watch a Kunqu excerpt at the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Training Institute; take a night tour of Shantang or ride a painted boat to see the lights on both banks; try local snacks and experience everyday life at Shuangta Market.

One-Day Trips Around Suzhou

Zhouzhuang — "China's No. 1 Water Town," with rowing boats passing through water lanes; Tongli — the Retreat and Reflection Garden and a World Heritage water town; Tiger Hill and Shantang Street can be done as a half-day round trip; Taihu East Mountain and West Mountain — lake and mountain scenery with tea gardens and orchards; you can also take high-speed rail to Shanghai or Hangzhou.
