Suzhou Travel Guide
Suzhou was founded more than 2,500 years ago and is the birthplace of Wu culture. It is famous for its Jiangnan style of "small bridges over flowing streams and white walls with dark tiles." Its classical gardens are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and intangible cultural heritages such as Kunqu opera, pingtan, embroidery, and kesi silk weaving continue to be passed down. Gardens lie within the city and waters lie beyond the gardens, making it ideal for slow, careful appreciation.
Suzhou is located in the core of the Yangtze River Delta, close to Shanghai, and can be reached by high-speed rail in about half an hour. It is an ideal stop for linking together a Jiangnan itinerary after entering China, and it is also convenient for extending trips to water towns such as Zhouzhuang and Tongli.

Suzhou-style dishes (squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, sizzling eel in hot oil, cherry pork), Suzhou-style noodle soups (Azao noodles, Fengzhen large pork noodles), pan-fried buns, crab shell pastry, osmanthus sugar porridge, fermented rice cakes, the Three Whites of Taihu Lake (whitefish, white shrimp, silverfish), and Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs (in autumn).
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March–May), when the gardens are lush with flowers and trees, and autumn (September–November), with clear skies, fat crabs, and yellow chrysanthemums, are both the best seasons; the plum rain season and midsummer are relatively hot and humid, while winter is cooler but has fewer tourists.
Transportation Guide
Suzhou Station and Suzhou North Station have high-speed rail connections to Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and other places; the city's metro network covers major attractions, and the old city is suitable for walking and cycling; access from Shanghai Hongqiao or Pudong Airport is very convenient.
