Destination Introduction

Xinjiang, the largest provincial-level administrative region in China, accounts for one-sixth of the country's total area and is a vast land of breathtaking expanse. It brings together almost every type of landform on Earth—the Tianshan Mountains run east to west, dividing Xinjiang into two major basins: the Junggar Basin in the north with green grasslands and scattered lakes, and the Tarim Basin in the south with vast stretches of yellow sand and boundless desert. The emerald waves of Kanas Lake hide legends of lake monsters, the pure blue of Sayram Lake is like the last tear of the Atlantic, the flower seas of Nalati Grassland spread to the end of the horizon, and every bend of the Duku Highway through the Tianshan Mountains is a peerless landscape. Xinjiang is also the core area of the Silk Road, where Eastern and Western civilizations have met and collided for more than two thousand years—the thousand-year-old bazaar of Kashgar Old City is still bustling, Uyghur song and dance are passionate as fire, and the call to prayer from Id Kah Mosque travels through time and space. This is a land of melons and fruits, where the sweetness of Hami melon, the plumpness of grapes, and the richness of jujubes are gifts of abundant sunshine in every bite. The cumin aroma of grilled lamb skewers, the hot and savory flavor of big plate chicken, and the golden grains of pilaf let the taste buds bloom freely along the Silk Road. The magnificence of Xinjiang cannot be conveyed by photographs; only by being there can one feel that boundless, soul-stirring grandeur.

Xinjiang is China's travel destination with the most magnificent natural scenery and the greatest geographical span, worthy of being called "touring the whole world in one province." For a first visit, it is recommended to arrange more than 10 days; the classic Northern Xinjiang loop (Urumqi→Kanas→Sayram Lake→Ili) is the most classic choice. If time permits, Kashgar and the Pamir Plateau in Southern Xinjiang offer a completely different cultural experience. June to September is the best season for Northern Xinjiang, and September to October is the most comfortable time for Southern Xinjiang. Xinjiang is enormous, with distances between attractions often reaching hundreds of kilometers, so self-driving or chartering a car is the best way to travel. Note that Xinjiang uses Beijing Time, but the actual time difference is about 2 hours, and locals are accustomed to living 2 hours later.

Featured Cuisine

Xinjiang Big Plate Chicken

Xinjiang's most representative hearty dish, with large chunks of chicken stir-fried in an iron plate with potatoes and green and red peppers, poured with rich sauce, and finally served with handmade wide noodles mixed with the thick broth. It is spicy, fragrant, and generous in portion. One plate of big plate chicken is enough for three or four people and perfectly reflects the bold character of Xinjiang people.

📍 Urumqi Blood Bank Big Plate Chicken, Shawan Big Plate Chicken (the place of origin), available throughout Xinjiang

Grilled Lamb Skewers

The soul of Xinjiang barbecue lies in the quality of the lamb and the aroma of cumin. Authentic Xinjiang lamb skewers are threaded onto iron skewers, with large pieces of meat alternating fat and lean, grilled over charcoal until crispy outside and tender inside, then sprinkled with cumin and chili powder. One bite releases rich fat and intense meaty aroma, making it the most unmissable food in Xinjiang's night markets.

📍 Urumqi International Grand Bazaar, barbecue stalls in night markets across various cities

Pilaf

A traditional staple food of the Uyghur people, made by simmering lamb, carrots, onions, raisins, and rice in a large iron pot. The rice grains are distinct and golden and glossy, the lamb is tender and fresh, and the carrots are sweet and soft; every bite tastes of the Silk Road. The traditional way to eat it is directly with the hands, hence the name "hand-grabbed rice."

Naan

The "bread" of Xinjiang people, with a history of more than 2,000 years. The dough is stuck to the inner wall of a naan pit and baked over charcoal, crispy outside and soft inside with a rich wheat aroma. There are more than 50 kinds of naan—sesame naan,窝窝naan, rose naan, and meat naan each have their own flavor. Freshly baked hot naan is golden and crispy, the simplest and most moving taste of Xinjiang.

Transportation Guide

How to Get There

💡 Urumqi is Xinjiang's aviation and railway hub, with direct flights from major cities across the country. Flying from Beijing/Shanghai to Urumqi takes about 4-5 hours. The Lanzhou-Xinjiang High-Speed Railway connects to the interior, but takes a long time. Intra-Xinjiang routes are well developed; flying from Urumqi to Kashgar takes about 2 hours, and to Yining about 1 hour

Local Transportation

🚇 Metro: Urumqi has Metro Line 1; other cities have no metro

🚌 Bus: Urumqi's bus routes are relatively complete; public transportation in other cities is limited

🚕 Taxi: The starting fare in various cities is about 10 yuan; using ride-hailing is recommended. Distances between scenic areas are long, so taxis are not practical

💡 Xinjiang is enormous, with distances between attractions often several hundred kilometers, so self-driving or chartering a car is strongly recommended. The full Northern Xinjiang loop is about 3,000 kilometers, and the Southern Xinjiang loop is about 4,000 kilometers. Note that Xinjiang uses Beijing Time, but sunrise and sunset are about 2 hours later than in the interior
