Lhasa City Day Tour: Potala Palace + Chakpori + Tibetan Culture Experience + Barkhor Street
[Potala Palace · Holy Sanctuary]
When sunlight falls on the Potala Palace, this palace complex, the highest in the world, reveals its solemn and sacred appearance. Walking slowly up the steps, with your fingertips brushing the red walls that have endured for thousands of years, it feels as if you can touch the pulse of history. Inside the palace, exquisitely beautiful murals tell of the rise and fall of the Tubo Dynasty, and precious cultural relics give off a warm luster under the glow of butter lamps. Standing at the top of the palace and looking down, the whole of Lhasa comes into view, with distant snow mountains and nearby residences complementing each other, leaving one enchanted by the weight of history and the vividness of reality.
[Chakpori Hill Viewing Platform · Photography]
The nearby Chakpori Hill Viewing Platform is the best place to photograph a panoramic view of the Potala Palace. Here you can capture the same angle as on the 50-yuan RMB note.
[Tibetan Culture Experience and Barkhor Street · Pulse of Faith]
Now that you are in Lhasa, you can still experience traditional Tibetan handicrafts (Tibetan incense making). Head to the Tibetan Culture Experience Hall to learn how refreshing Tibetan incense is made, and you can also take part in making it yourself, which is entirely different in meaning from buying Tibetan incense.
Then step into the lively Barkhor Street. This circular street is Lhasa's oldest commercial street and also an important route for pilgrims to walk around while spinning prayer wheels. On both sides of the street, Tibetan-style residences and various shops are arranged in an orderly yet varied way. Prayer wheels turn continuously under the hands of the faithful, making crisp sounds. Strolling through it, you can choose distinctive Tibetan handicrafts, taste sweet butter tea and soft Tibetan pastries, and also see Tibetan people in traditional clothing, experiencing the rich Tibetan atmosphere.
One specialty meal is included that day (which can be arranged at noon or in the evening): Tibetan cuisine or Nepalese cuisine, to experience the local flavor.
