It is one of Xining's most popular tourist destinations and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, a master of Tibetan Buddhism and the second Buddha of the world. The monastery has magnificent architecture, rich treasures, and flourishing incense, and is one of the best places to learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture. In addition, Kumbum Monastery is world-famous for butter sculptures, murals, and barbola, known as the "Three Wonders of Kumbum Monastery." This morning, you will depart from Xining and drive about 145 km (about 2.5–3 hours) to visit Qinghai Lake. 【Qinghai Lake】(elevation about 3,194 meters) is China's largest inland saltwater lake, like a brilliant pearl set on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It was rated by Chinese National Geography as the "Number One of China's Five Most Beautiful Lakes" and selected for the "55 Places to Visit in a Lifetime" list. Its deep, boundless blue water is surrounded by large expanses of golden rapeseed flowers and rolling green grasslands, dotted with colorful prayer flags and leisurely grazing cattle and sheep. It is a rich and colorful scene unique to Qinghai Lake, where water and sky merge into one. (PS: Best viewing period for Qinghai Lake rapeseed flowers and grasslands: July to August) Upon arriving at Qinghai Lake, you will visit Erlangjian Scenic Area, one of the famous attractions of Qinghai Lake. Here, you can feel the rippling blue waves of Qinghai Lake up close, enjoy the natural beauty where lake and sky merge, and immerse yourself in exploring rich cultural heritage such as Tibetan cultural symbols and the legend of the Queen Mother of the West. Optional activities at your own expense: To fully enjoy the breathtaking natural scenery of Qinghai Lake, you can choose to take a boat ride and comfortably tour the lake. Options include: high-speed boat (one way about 20 minutes, 140 RMB/person) or luxury cruise (round trip about 50 minutes, 180 RMB/person). After visiting Erlangjian Scenic Area, continue westward along the picturesque shores of Qinghai Lake to Chaka Town (elevation about 3,100 meters), famous for its stunning Chaka Salt Lake. After breakfast, you will drive about 4 kilometers from Chaka Town (about a 10-minute drive) to visit the Chaka Salt Lake scenic area. Chaka Salt Lake is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese salt culture, with a salt industry history dating back to the Western Han Dynasty. The entire salt lake is set against snow-capped peaks and green meadows. It is a saltwater lake where water and salt perfectly blend, beautiful in all four seasons: rippling blue waves in summer, vast and desolate in winter. The lake surface is as clear as a mirror, reflecting blue skies, white clouds, and snow mountains, earning it the reputation of "China's Mirror of the Sky." You can climb the viewing platform to overlook the panoramic view of Chaka Salt Lake. If interested, spend some time exploring the world's largest outdoor salt sculpture art group, the Salt Sculpture Group, to learn about Chaka's history and culture; or leisurely stroll in the salt lake above the clouds, fully experiencing the wonder of "water reflects the sky, sky meets the earth, people walk in the lake as if traveling in a painting." If you want a more immersive experience, you can also take a retro small train along the tracks deep into the heart of the lake, immersing yourself in a world of salt. Zhangye is named after "extending the nation's arm to reach the Western Regions," and has the praise of "if you do not look at the snow on the Qilian Mountains, you would mistake Zhangye for Jiangnan." After breakfast, first visit the Great Buddha Temple. The 【Great Buddha Temple】, also known as "Reclining Buddha Temple," was first built in the first year of Yong'an in the Western Xia Dynasty (1098), with a history of over 900 years. It is one of the four existing royal temples in China. Inside the temple is the largest indoor clay reclining Buddha in China and Asia, with a body length of about 34.5 meters and a shoulder width of about 7.5 meters; even a person could lie flat on just one finger. The 【Zhangye Rainbow Danxia Scenic Area】 is located at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains, 230 kilometers southeast of Jiayuguan. It is one of China's seven most beautiful Danxia landforms and has been honored as one of the "Top Ten Magical Geographical Wonders of the World" and "One of the Twenty-Two Most Unforgettable Landscapes in the World." Its grandeur, spectacular scale, peculiar shapes, and brilliant colors are unparalleled. Standing there, it feels like stepping into a colorful fairy-tale world. The scenic area has 4 viewing platforms, with shuttle buses running between them. After breakfast, you will drive about 57 kilometers (about 1 hour) to visit 【Pingshanhu Grand Canyon】, praised as "a living textbook of geological history." Pingshanhu Grand Canyon is located northeast of Zhangye city, in the transition zone between the Corridor Plain and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, and is an important passage from the Hexi Corridor to Inner Mongolia. After hundreds of millions of years of wind and rain erosion, the canyon has formed a landscape interwoven with Danxia, Yardang, and canyon landforms. It is known for its desolate and magnificent red rock formations and has been evaluated as "comparable to Zhangjiajie" and "on par with the Grand Canyon of Colorado," earning the title "China's Colorado." It is not only a stunning geological wonder on the Silk Road, but also one of the most charming attractions on the Qinghai-Gansu tourism loop. Especially under sunlight, the canyon's rock layers become brilliantly colorful and have been described as "a mysterious world like an alien planet." It is renowned for its "five wonders": towering sand dunes, singing sand dunes, vibrant lakes, magical springs, and ancient temples. It is hailed as "China's Most Beautiful Desert" and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024 as the "Badain Jaran Desert—Sand Mountains and Lakes." Today's travel route will be adjusted according to current conditions.
