Destination Introduction

Sichuan, a magnificent province in the heart of southwestern China, is named after the "four great rivers" and has been known since ancient times as the "Land of Abundance." This land of 486,000 square kilometers brings together breathtaking natural wonders and the time-honored Ba-Shu civilization. The colorful lakes of Jiuzhaigou are dreamlike, the Buddha's halo and sea of clouds on Mount Emei are soul-stirring, the three sacred mountains of Daocheng Yading are hailed as "the last pure land on the blue planet," and the low-altitude glacier of Hailuogou lets visitors come face to face with a wonder of ice and snow hundreds of millions of years in the making. The provincial capital, Chengdu, is a city that makes people never want to leave once they arrive—the covered-bowl tea of Kuanzhai Alley, the Three Kingdoms culture of Jinli Ancient Street, and the international fashion of Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li all radiate the "bashi" philosophy of life. This is also the hometown of the giant panda, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is home to more than 200 round and roly-poly national treasures. Sichuan hot pot's numbing, spicy, fresh, and fragrant flavors drive the whole world crazy, and its UNESCO-certified title as a "City of Gastronomy" is well deserved. From the thousand-year water-conservancy wisdom of the World Cultural Heritage site Dujiangyan, to the solemn and majestic countenance of the Leshan Giant Buddha gazing at the confluence of three rivers, from the Taoist fairyland of Mount Qingcheng, "the most secluded under heaven," to the continuous snow peaks of Mount Siguniang, "the Oriental Alps," Sichuan rewards every traveler who comes from afar with endless surprises. Whether you are a culture lover in pursuit of World Heritage sites, an outdoor adventurer embracing nature, or a food hunter traveling a thousand miles for an authentic hot pot, Sichuan can satisfy your richest imaginings of travel.

Sichuan is the ultimate destination for travel in western China, with the number of World Natural and Cultural Heritage sites ranking among the highest in the country. For a first visit, it is recommended to plan at least 7 days: 2-3 days in downtown Chengdu (Panda Base + Wuhou Shrine + Kuanzhai Alley + Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng), then choose one outer route to go deeper—the Jiuzhaigou direction for water, the Emei-Leshan direction for Buddha sites, and the western Sichuan direction for mountains. Spring and autumn (March-May, September-November) are the best times to travel, and autumn is especially suitable for Jiuzhaigou and Daocheng Yading. The western Sichuan plateau has a relatively high altitude, so altitude sickness prevention should be prepared in advance.
