Free-time suggestions 1. Dunhuang Museum (closed on Mondays, reservation required): Its architectural design is unique, blending elements such as the Great Wall, beacon towers, and ancient castles. The museum has a rich collection of about 13,524 items (sets). Among them, treasures worth close inspection include the Western Han hemp paper ink writing (one of China's earliest physical examples of paper), the Northern Liang stone pagoda (a treasure of Buddhist art), and the 1:1 replica cave of Mogao Cave 45 (fully presenting High Tang murals and painted sculptures). 2. Dunhuang Shazhou Night Market: This is one of Dunhuang's most representative night markets. You can taste authentic Dunhuang foods such as apricot juice, donkey meat yellow noodles, pao'er yougao, braised lamb with flatbread, and red willow branch grilled lamb. Evening paid performances: (advance reservation required) 1. "Music of Dunhuang" (performed year-round): The world's first cave-style immersive theater, telling the story of the early Tang Western Regions youth Baixin's journey in search of music. The performance uses modern technology combined with live performance to recreate cultural elements from Dunhuang murals, including music, dance, poetry, clothing, and painting. 2. "Dunhuang Grand Ceremony" (limited to peak season): The world's first large-scale desert live-action performance, set against Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake. Through a 360-degree rotating and moving audience seating area, it tells the poignant love story of a young painter and a princess, recreates the former prosperity of the ancient Silk Road, and showcases Dunhuang's unique cultural charm (including the "Molten Iron Fireworks" performance). 3. "Encore Dunhuang" (limited to peak season): A large-scale indoor experiential drama directed by Wang Chaoge, one of the chief directors of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The audience travels through the Library Cave and Mogao Caves, personally experiencing Dunhuang culture and the splendor of the Silk Road. 4. "Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes" (limited to peak season): A large-scale theatrical production performed by the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe, telling the folk story of "Miaoshan saving her father." The dance movements are graceful, the cultural connotations are profound, and the artistic standard is extremely high. Suggested ways to arrive 1. By plane: Dunhuang Mogao International Airport (DNH) is about 13 kilometers from downtown Dunhuang and about 22 kilometers from the Mogao Caves. It has many direct domestic routes in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, Lanzhou... Be sure to check flight schedules in advance, because not all routes operate year-round. 2. By train: Dunhuang Railway Station is about 10 kilometers from the city center, with direct high-speed rail lines from Xi'an, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, and Jiayuguan; Liuyuan Railway Station is more than 100 kilometers from downtown Dunhuang, with high-speed rail connections to and from Urumqi, Kashgar, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Jiayuguan, Zhangye, Turpan, and other places.

In the morning, take a car to visit Yumen Pass, about 100 km (about 2 hours) from Dunhuang city. 【Yumen Pass】 was first built during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. It was the gateway from the Western Regions to the Central Plains during the Han Dynasty and the "throat" of the ancient Silk Road. It was named because fine jade from Khotan and other places in the Western Regions entered the Central Plains through this pass. It once witnessed the coming and going of caravans with camel bells and the blending of Chinese and Western cultures. It has a long history of more than 2,000 years and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014. The famous Tang poet Wang Zhihuan's line, "Why should the Qiang flute complain about the willows? The spring breeze does not reach Yumen Pass," fully expresses the desolation of the frontier and the hardship of garrison duty. The existing relics of Yumen Pass include Xiaofangpan City (the site of Yumen Pass of the Han Dynasty), Dafangpan City (a Han Dynasty military supply warehouse), and the Han Great Wall site (one of the best-preserved sections of the Han Great Wall in China). Strolling among them, you can experience up close the military defense system from 2,000 years ago. Standing in the vast Gobi and listening to the wind, it feels as if you can travel back a thousand years and feel the loneliness of the frontier soldiers and the resilience of the Silk Road merchants. The scenes of armored horses and melodious camel bells seem like events of yesterday. This itinerary focuses on visiting the Han Great Wall, about 5 km from Yumen Pass, reached by sightseeing bus (included). This is one of the best-preserved and most representative sections of the Han Great Wall existing in China. It was built by ramming local tamarisk and reed branches with sand and soil layer by layer. After 2,000 years of wind and rain erosion, although damaged, its outline remains clear, making it a miracle of ancient architecture. Yumen Pass Scenic Area performances (peak season only) 1. After lunch, proceed to visit Yardang National Geopark, about 80 km (about 1.5 hours) away. 【Yardang National Geopark】, also known as "Devil's City," is one of the three most beautiful yardang landscapes in China. Because of its unique wind-eroded landforms, spectacular sunset views, and imaginative geological wonders, it has become an unmissable natural wonder on the Silk Road. Millions of years of wind erosion have carved the originally flat lacustrine sedimentary strata into vivid forms such as castles, warships, stone pillars, and giant beasts. You can visit in sequence Golden Lion Welcoming Guests (like a majestic lion welcoming guests from afar), Sphinx (resembling the Egyptian Sphinx), Standing Peacock (one of the landmark sights, shaped like a peacock looking back), West Sea Fleet (the essence of the yardang landscape, a vast group of yardang formations neatly arranged on the Gobi, much like a huge naval fleet ready to set sail), and other sights, fully enjoying the uncanny, alien-like landforms. In the evening, proceed to visit 【Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake】, praised as "one of the five most beautiful deserts in China." Mingsha Mountain is formed by shifting sand, with peaks over 100 meters high and steep slopes. The slopes have wave-like sand ripples. When people slide down from the top, it produces a bell-like sound, hence the name. It is said that when there is not a cloud in the sky and the wind stops and the sand is still, one can even hear the sound of string and bamboo music, which is truly wonderful. Crescent Lake, located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, is named for its shape like a crescent moon. The spring water is clear to the bottom. Although strong winds and sandstorms occur year after year, for thousands of years this clear spring has never overflowed after long rains nor dried up in drought. Here you can stroll in the desert and enjoy the beautiful scenes of "a solitary smoke rising straight in the vast desert, the setting sun round over the long river" and "silver mountains surrounded by sand on all sides, a pool of clear water with green ripples." You may also choose various activities (at your own expense), such as camel riding, sand sledding, beach motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and gliders... Notes 1. Sightseeing buses at Yumen Pass and Yardang National Geopark: Xiaofangpan City is near the entrance and can be reached on foot; the Han Great Wall (5 km) and Dafangpan City (12 km) require the sightseeing bus (included). At Yardang National Geopark, you will take the sightseeing bus (included) to enjoy the wind-eroded landforms. 2. The drive today is long, the ultraviolet rays are strong, the temperature is high, and there are few dining facilities in the scenic area. It is recommended that you bring sufficient drinking water and high-calorie snacks in case of need! 3. Infrastructure in northwestern Gansu is relatively weak, and conditions in various aspects are somewhat tougher. 4. Today, you will embark on a wonderful Dunhuang cultural journey. After breakfast, head to the Mogao Caves, one of China's Four Great Grottoes. [Mogao Caves], also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, is hailed as the "Treasure House of Oriental Art." It is the world's largest and richest surviving site of Buddhist art and a witness to the convergence of diverse civilizations along the ancient Silk Road. It was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987. The caves were carved over a millennium and contain vast and rich remains of murals, painted sculptures, and cave shrines, making it a world-famous treasure house of Buddhist art. Upon arriving at the Mogao Caves scenic area, you can first visit the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center to watch a wonderful digital film, "Millennium Mogao," for a preliminary understanding of the site. Then take a shuttle bus to the cave area (PS: photography is prohibited inside the caves). Led by a guide, you will visit 8 caves in sequence, such as the Library Cave (Caves 16–17, the largest cave), the Nine-Story Tower (the common name for the wooden structure outside Cave 96, one of the iconic buildings of Mogao), and the Nirvana Cave (Cave 148, where the reclining Buddha is located)... The specific caves visited depend on actual on-site conditions, but several classic caves will be included. If interested, you can visit the Dunhuang Grottoes Cultural Relics Protection and Research Exhibition Center to see 1:1 replicas of 8 highly representative caves, including Caves 275, 249, 419, 220, 217, 3, and 25 (photography allowed). After the visit, return to the hotel to rest after lunch. Optional Attractions Dunhuang Bookstore (reservation required): A popular Dunhuang attraction, a modern lifestyle aesthetic space combining reading, cultural creative products, coffee, and events. Notes 1. To protect the caves, the Mogao Caves operate on a real-name reservation system with daily visitor limits. Tickets are divided into Type A (6,000 per day) and Type B (12,000 per day, with priority for domestic visitors). Type A includes 8 caves and 2 digital films; Type B includes 4 caves and the Cave Cultural Relics Protection and Research Exhibition Center. 2. On the day of your visit, please follow the arrangements of the Mogao Caves management. The order of visiting Mingsha Mountain and the Mogao Caves may be adjusted. 3. If you are particularly interested in the caves, you can purchase on-site tickets for special caves (queuing may be required) to explore more exquisite caves. Special caves (at your own expense) are divided into Line 1 (Caves 45, 320, 321, 420, 9, 428) and Line 2 (Caves 275, 45, 156, 158). 4. During the Dunhuang Expo or in case of severe weather or other factors affecting visits, if the Mogao Caves cannot be visited as planned, our agency will refund the Mogao Caves ticket based on actual costs or arrange a visit to the Western Thousand Buddha Caves as an alternative.
