8-Day Private Car Tour: Nyingchi - Grand Canyon - Namtso - Shigatse - Mount Everest

In the morning, drive from Lhasa along the Lhasa-Nyingchi Expressway, cross the 5,013-meter Mira Pass, and head to Nyingchi, known as the "Jiangnan of the Plateau" and an oxygen-rich paradise. Drive east along the Niyang River, passing the birthplace of Songtsen Gampo and the Middle Stream Pillar, and feel the refreshment brought by the green mountains and clear waters of Tibet's Jiangnan. After lunch, head to the holy lake of the Red Sect—Basum Lake, a tear left by an angel. The lake is shaped like a crescent moon inlaid in a high mountain canyon. The water is crystal clear, and snow mountains are reflected in the lake, creating a delightful scene that truly brings you back to "Shangri-La" and leaves you enchanted. Snow peaks, glaciers, primeval forests, and historical sites tightly surround Basum Lake. At sunset, the snow mountain peaks turn red while the base remains a deep blue-black. The silhouettes of trees near the lake float on the water surface, and the lake is a serene blue, making this place seem like a fairyland on earth. There is a small island in the lake, and on the island is a temple built at the end of the Tang Dynasty—Cuosong Temple. The main hall enshrines Padmasambhava, Thousand-Hand Guanyin, and the Golden Boy and Jade Girl. Afterwards, drive to Bayi Town in Nyingchi for overnight stay.

In the morning, drive from Nyingchi, take the scenic shuttle bus at Pai Town to Zhibai, and arrive at the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon scenic area. At the grand canyon viewing platform, admire up close Namcha Barwa, "China's most beautiful snow peak." Standing by the Yarlung Tsangpo River, watch the surging waters and listen to the roar of the canyon, and appreciate the world-famous First and Second Great Bends of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Along the way, enjoy canyons, forests, streams, snow mountains, lake views, and pastoral scenery—picturesque scenes and poetic moods—before returning to Nyingchi.

After breakfast, head to Kading Valley, also known as Gading Valley Heavenly Buddha Waterfall. The terrain here is steep and towering, a typical canyon landform. It features fantastic peaks, strange rocks, and ancient towering trees, with a waterfall dropping nearly 200 meters in a majestic and spectacular scene. On the cliffs are naturally formed images such as the Great Buddha, Goddess, Guanyin, Dharma Protector, Tathagata Buddha, lamas chanting scriptures, the divine turtle calling to heaven, the divine eagle offering treasure, butter lamps, and Tibetan "Six-Syllable Mantra" Buddha characters. Then continue to a Tibetan village to participate in a distinctive folk village activity with Tibetan compatriots (tasting butter tea, eating snacks, and learning about their daily life and diet) to experience Tibetan culture. Finally, on the return journey, enjoy the scattered colorful water birds along the Niyang River, terraced fields, and unique Tibetan villages, painting a highland paradise scroll. In the evening, return to Lhasa for overnight stay.

In the morning, drive from Lhasa, take National Highway 318 and then branch off at the bridge, traveling all the way amid the scenery of the Yarlung Tsangpo River to Gambala Pass (elevation 4,990 meters). This is an excellent spot to overlook Yamdrok Lake (elevation 4,441 meters), one of the "Three Great Holy Lakes of Tibet." From the Tibetan-style viewing platform with fluttering colorful prayer flags and a huge mani pile, gaze at the clear and calm lake surface under the sunlight shifting through varying shades of light blue, deep blue, and sky blue, reflecting the washed-blue sky, with towering snow mountains in the distance—an extreme beauty unrivaled in southern Tibet. If you are lucky, you may even see a wonderous scene with dark clouds on one side, a brilliant rainbow on another, and endless sunset glow elsewhere. After lunch in Nagarze, continue driving to visit Karola Glacier (elevation 5,000 meters). The glacier standing beside the road is like a giant thangka hanging on the cliff wall, crystal clear and pure white, so close that it seems within reach. Finally, pass through the ancient city of Gyantse and head to Shigatse, the capital of Tsang at an elevation of 3,750 meters, for overnight stay.

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse, pass through Lhatse, cross Gyatso La Snow Mountain, and arrive in Tingri County at the foot of Mount Everest on the northern slope of the Himalayas. From here, begin the journey to explore the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. The first stop is Gawula Pass, the world's most spectacular snow mountain viewing platform, where you can see four peaks of the Himalayas over 8,000 meters towering in the distance. Then arrive at Everest Base Camp at an elevation of 5,200 meters. Here is Rongbuk Monastery, the highest temple in the world, with white stupas standing and colorful prayer flags fluttering. It is recognized as the best place to look up at Mount Everest. As night gradually falls and dusk slowly shrouds the mountains, only the summit of Everest shines in the sunset like the goddess's golden crown in the sky, allowing you to enjoy the honor of standing atop the world and being supreme on earth.

In the early morning, while the peaks still sleep in the dawn, face the rising sun and look up at Mount Everest, receiving the spiritual baptism of the world's highest peak (elevation 8,844.43 meters). Admire the holy scene of the world's highest peak with year-round snow on the summit, hanging glaciers, and towering silver peaks. With lingering memories of Everest's beauty, return to Shigatse.

After breakfast, drive to visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of successive Panchen Lamas. For more than 500 years, it has attracted numerous Buddhist believers and visitors from home and abroad to worship and admire. In the monastery, incense smoke rises from censers, offering lamps flicker, and the Buddhas have different dignified appearances. In the main hall, monks chant scriptures in orderly fashion, and visiting believers prostrate themselves before the Buddha statues. Here is enshrined the world's largest indoor bronze seated Buddha statue, the Maitreya Buddha, built in 1914 under the supervision of the Ninth Panchen Lama, Chokyi Nyima. It also preserves precious Buddhist scriptures written in gold powder, such as the Kangyur and Tengyur. Afterwards, return to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley via the China-Nepal Highway.

In the early morning, drive from Lhasa, pass through the grasslands of northern Tibet, appreciate the fluttering colorful prayer flags, speed along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, cross the 5,190-meter Nagenla Pass, and arrive at Namtso, the "Heavenly Lake," first among Tibet's three great holy lakes. At an elevation of 4,718 meters, it is the highest saltwater lake in the world and the second largest in China. To the south is the year-round snow-capped Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, while to the north and west are highland hills. The broad lakeshore is surrounded by grasslands with abundant water and lush grass. The lake water has a high salt content, and the basin is rich in wildlife resources, including yaks and goats; the lake also has many wild birds and produces scale fish and scaleless fish. The lake water is clear and reflects the surrounding snow mountains, with beautiful scenery, like a crystal-clear pearl inlaid on the vast Changtang grasslands.
