Lhasa - Yamdrok Lake - Shigatse

Distance: 360KM Overnight altitude: 3,950m Scenic spots along the way: Lhasa River Valley, Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Pelkor Chode Monastery Today you will begin your journey across the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway. First, you will cross the 5,030-meter-high [Gampa La Pass], which is also the best spot to overlook Yamdrok Lake. The azure sky and lake waters mirror each other, and the pure lake displays different shades of blue under the sunlight—a breathtaking sight. Afterward, you will visit the world's highest freshwater lake, Yamdrok Lake. [Yamdrok Lake], or Yamdrok Tso for short, means "Lake of the Swans" in Tibetan. At an altitude of 4,441 meters, it is one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet and is unrivaled in beauty in southern Tibet. The crystal-clear water, towering snow mountains, and spotless blue sky merge into one, and the picturesque scenery is enough to make anyone linger. After visiting Yamdrok Lake, you will drive via Nagarze to visit the [Karola Glacier] at over 5,000 meters above sea level. Karola Glacier lies right beside the road, like a giant thangka hanging on the mountain wall—crystal clear, pure white, and so close it seems you could touch it. Then head to Gyantse to visit [Pelkor Chode Monastery], the only monastery that integrates Tibet's three major Buddhist sects and is famous for its exquisite murals and carvings, along with its Hundred Thousand Buddha Stupa. In the evening, arrive in Shigatse, the seat of the Tsang region, and check in for the night.

Shigatse - Qilin Gorge - Everest East Face - Rongbuk Monastery - Everest Base Camp

Driving distance: 392KM Overnight altitude: 4900 meters Scenic spots along the way: Kongma Grassland, distant view of Qomoyongqing, Qilin Gorge, Dinggye Wetland, Rimana Snow Mountain, Lhotse, Longren Mountain (Everest east face), Rongbuk Monastery, Everest Base Camp After breakfast, you will set off from Shigatse for Everest Base Camp. Along the way, you will pass through the beautiful Kongma Grassland, then arrive in Gangba County, the land of divine water, where you can gaze at China's most beautiful snow mountain,【Mother of Snow Mountains—Qomoyongqing】. Legend says it is the mother of the surrounding snow mountains, hence the name Mother of Snow Mountains. Afterwards, continue along Route 219, also known as the China-India-Nepal border highway, for 45 kilometers, then arrive at the magical Qilin Gorge.【Qilin Gorge】is a famous canyon geological landscape set within a long, deep gorge, sunken hundreds of meters below the surface. The earth forests rise like bamboo shoots, with towering boulders reaching toward the sky. They stretch out in vast arrays, interwoven and scattered, or arranged in groups of three or five, like solemn and independent guardians. At Qilin Gorge, you can personally experience the masterful craftsmanship of nature and marvel at its geological wonders of "majesty, wonder, peril, and uniqueness." After lunch, continue along the China-India-Nepal border Route 219 for about 30 kilometers. Along the way, you can admire one of China's most beautiful snow mountains,【Rimana Snow Mountain】, known locally as Renqing Snow Mountain, and also enjoy China's largest wetland,【Dinggye Wetland】. Afterwards, follow the wetland to Dinggye County, the kingdom of wetlands. After a short rest here, you can gaze along the Yeru Tsangpo river valley at【the world's fourth highest peak, Lhotse】. Then follow the beautiful border village road to the sacred mountain【Longren Mountain】. At Longren Mountain, you can view up close the world's fifth highest peak, Makalu, and the east face of Everest. Here is a "grand platter of beautiful scenery": the golden sunrise/sunset on three 8000-meter-class snow peaks—Everest (8844 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters, world's fourth), Makalu (8463 meters, world's fifth), and Chomolonzo (7804 meters)—unfold before your eyes one after another. Afterwards, you will visit the world's highest-altitude monastery—Rongbuk Monastery.【Rongbuk Monastery】is universally recognized as the best location to gaze up at Mount Everest. Then you will arrive at【Everest Base Camp】, take a photo with the altitude monument at Everest Base Camp, and here you will dance with the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. If fortunate, you may also see the Everest banner cloud drifting like a flame of life. Tip: In winter, the Rongbuk Monastery camp tents are not open, so accommodation will be changed to a multi-person room at a guesthouse in Basong Village.

Everest Base Camp - Shishapangma - Peiku Lake - Saga

Driving distance: 330KM Overnight altitude: 3,700 meters Scenic spots along the way: Mount Everest, Gyawu La Pass, Shishapangma, Peiku Tso In the early morning, while the peaks are still asleep in the dawn, you will travel through the majestic, magnificent, and winding Himalayas alongside the first ray of dawn rising over 【Mount Everest】. In the desolation and silence, you will cross the 【Gyawu La Pass】 at an altitude of 5,200 meters, where you can see the spectacular sight of four snow-capped peaks over 8,000 meters arranged in a row. From left to right, these four peaks are: Makalu (8,463 meters); Lhotse (8,516 meters); Mount Everest (8,848 meters); Cho Oyu (8,201 meters). Afterwards, accompanied by the beautiful glacier group of 【Shishapangma】, you will head toward Saga. Along the way, you will pass a roadside plateau lake called 【Peiku Tso】, and finally arrive at Saga for overnight accommodation.

Saga - Zhongba - Mount Kailash - Tarchen

Distance: 498KM Overnight altitude: 4,000m Attractions along the way: Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, Lake Rakshastal In the morning you will set off from Saga for the sacred mountain and holy lake. First you will visit the holy lake [Lake Manasarovar]. Lake Manasarovar enjoys the reputation of "Mother of the World's Rivers," and is the place called "Jade Pool of the Western Heaven" by the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang in his Great Tang Records on the Western Regions. It is also one of Tibet's three famous holy lakes, and together with Mount Kailash is known as the "Sacred Mountain and Holy Lake." Lake Manasarovar is also the lake with the highest measured transparency in China today, with clarity reaching 14 meters, limpid and transparent. The clear lake water reflects the blue sky, vast and boundless. The lakeshore is surrounded by the Namnanani Snow Mountains, and the lake and mountain scenery is enchanting. Separated from the holy lake by a single embankment is the barren [Lake Rakshastal], known as the Ghost Lake. It is said that the bottoms of Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal are connected, with one being the freshwater holy lake and the other the saltwater ghost lake. It can be said that the two together form a wonder. After having lunch in Paryang at noon, you will pass through the Mayou Bridge border checkpoint to Tarchen, where you will pay homage to the sacred mountain—[Mount Kailash]. Mount Kailash, at an altitude of 6,638 meters, is called "Shiva's Paradise" in Sanskrit and means "Mountain of the Gods" in Tibetan. Its form resembles a pyramid, with four highly symmetrical faces. It is a globally recognized sacred mountain and is regarded by Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, the indigenous Tibetan religion Bon, and ancient Jainism as the center of the world. The mystery of the sacred mountain lies in the fact that its sun-facing side, for some unknown reason, remains snow-covered year-round, while the back side of the sacred mountain has no snow for long periods; even when covered by white snow, it melts as soon as the sun comes out, exactly opposite to the usual laws of nature. In the evening you will stay overnight in Tarchen.

Tarchen - Zanda - Guge Kingdom - Tholing Monastery - Shiquanhe

Distance: 233KM Overnight altitude: 3,700m Scenic spots along the way: Mount Kailash, Guge Kingdom, Tholing Monastery, Shiquanhe In the morning, set off from Mount Kailash amid the morning glow, cross the [Zanda Earth Forest], and head to Zanda to visit the [Guge Kingdom Ruins]. The road conditions are rather rough, with some sections under repair. After lunch in Zanda, head to the majestic Guge Royal Palace (Guge Kingdom). The Guge Kingdom Ruins are an ancient plateau city located on a hill by the Langchen Tsangpo River in the Zangrang area of Zanda, Ngari, covering about 180,000 square meters. The entire site comprises over 300 houses and caves, 3 stupas (over 10 meters high), 4 temples, 2 halls, and 2 underground tunnels, divided into upper, middle, and lower levels—respectively the royal palace, temples, and residences. After touring, return to Zanda County town along the same route. Visit the 900-year-old [Tholing Monastery], whose architectural style and Buddha statues blend Indian Kashmir, Ladakh, and Nepalese influences. After visiting Tholing Monastery, head to Shiquanhe for the night.

Shiquanhe - Pangong Lake - Domar

Drive: 290KM Overnight altitude: 4255m Attractions along the way: Rutog Rock Carvings, Pangong Tso, Bird Island After breakfast, you will set off from Shiquanhe, first crossing the 4875-meter Lameila Pass, then arriving at Risong Township, where you can see the exquisite [Rutog Rock Carvings]. The Rutog mountain murals are the murals of the Rutog cave (named Dingqiong Lakang), depicting a vast complex of buildings, mainly the royal palace and the palace city. In the murals, mandalas (that is, sky burial platforms) are in the majority, divided into Buddhist and Bon ones, along with various Buddha and figure images, as well as some other ghost and monster images. Less than 20 kilometers out of Rutog County, you arrive at [Pangong Tso]. Pangong Tso is an international lake, mostly located in Rutog County of Ngari, with a small part in the Kashmir region. Pangong Tso has a peculiar feature: it is fresh in the east and salty in the west. Within China it is freshwater, with shady green trees and flocks of roosting birds, while in the Kashmir region it is saltwater, where fish do not grow. In addition, Pangong Tso is also the world's highest-altitude bird island, with about 20-plus species of birds here, numbering up to tens of thousands at most. In the evening, arrive in Domar for the overnight stay.

Domar - Jieshan Daban - Tianshuigou (Death Valley) - Dahongliutan - Sanshiliyingfang

Driving distance: 460KM Overnight altitude: 3,720 meters Scenic spots along the way: Hongtu Daban, the First Tibetan Village (Songxi Village), Jieshan Daban, Dead Man's Gulch (Quanshui Lake), Xinjiang-Tibet Border Archway, Dahongliutan, Kangxiwar Martyrs' Cemetery After breakfast, you will set off from Duoma, cross the 【Hongtu Daban】 at an altitude of 5,278 meters, and arrive at Songxi Village. 【Songxi Village】 is the last village on the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway on the Tibetan side near Xinjiang. Then you will continue onward, crossing the 【Jieshan Daban】 at an altitude of 5,248 meters. Jieshan Daban is the highest point of the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway and also the highest stretch of highway in the world. The boundary between Xinjiang and Tibet is defined by this point. This high mountain separates two ethnic groups: to the north are the Uyghurs who believe in Islam, and to the south are the Tibetans who believe in Buddhism. Crossing here allows us to appreciate another culture. The section from Jieshan Daban to Dahongliutan is the legendary "Dead Man's Gulch" road. According to local legend, in 1957, a company of the PLA advance force entering Tibet from Xinjiang was entirely wiped out overnight at 【Tianshui Gulch】 due to altitude sickness. Since then, this place has become terrifying to hear about and gradually came to be called "Dead Man's Gulch." However, the scenery along this route is extremely spectacular, with a kind of serene beauty. After leaving 【Dahongliutan】, you will pass by 【Kangxiwar Martyrs' Cemetery】, the highest-altitude martyrs' cemetery, where more than 100 heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the 1962 Sino-Indian Border War are buried. Afterwards, you will continue to Sanshiliyingfang. This stretch of road is the most precipitous and complex, with year-round wind and snow. You will stay overnight at Sanshiliyingfang.

Sanshiliyingfang - Yecheng - Zepu - Shache - Yingjisha - Kashgar

Distance: 589KM Overnight altitude: 1,264m Attractions along the way: Heiqia Daban, Mazar Daban, Kudi Daban, K2, Karakoram Range, Yecheng, Yecheng County Xitiya Lost City Scenic Area, Kashgar Old Town In the morning you will set off from Sanshiliyingfang, passing in turn through Heiqia Daban, Mazar Daban, and Kudi Daban. These three passes are representative of Route 219. [Heiqia Daban] is at an altitude of 4,906 meters; Heiqia means a mountain even monkeys cannot climb, and the road surface is gravel with sharp turns and steep slopes. [Mazar Daban] is at an altitude of 4,969 meters; Mazar means the tomb of the dead, and the descent is nearly 40 kilometers. With high altitude and steep, sharp turns, altitude sickness is likely, and many vehicles have lost their brakes here and plunged into the cliffs. Here you can also gaze into the distance at the world's second-highest peak, [K2], at an altitude of 8,611 meters. [Kudi Daban] is at an altitude of 3,150 meters and is the most precipitous major pass on Route 219, with a sudden rise in altitude of 2,000 meters. Afterward you will arrive in Yecheng. [Yecheng] is a small border town in Xinjiang with a rich ethnic minority atmosphere. Then you will continue onward, passing through Zepu, Shache, and Yingjisha to reach Kashgar. [Kashgar] is the westernmost city in China, looking east to the Tarim Basin and leaning west against the Pamir Plateau. More than 2,100 years ago, this was the meeting point at the western end of the southern and northern routes of the Chinese section of the Silk Road, and a transportation hub and gateway for China's economic and cultural exchanges with the West. "If you haven't been to Kashgar, you haven't been to Xinjiang." Kashgar Old Town is one of Xinjiang's most attractive tourism resources and also one of Xinjiang's most representative historical and cultural landscapes. After arriving in the evening, you can walk around, go to Id Kah Square and the distinctive Zhiren Street, visit the centuries-old handicraft street, and try local snacks such as ganggang rou; finally, go to a century-old teahouse to taste tea and experience the leisurely life of the locals. Feel the exotic charm of this famous Central Asian city.
