Lhasa City One-Day Tour: Potala Palace + Jokhang Temple + Barkhor Street
In the morning you will visit the Potala Palace, the world's highest ancient palace-fortress complex, which served as the residence of successive Dalai Lamas and the center of Tibetan political and religious power. Before ascending the Potala Palace, you must climb 1,080 steps. Though it may be a bit tiring, you can look out over the entire city of Lhasa, and the beautiful scenery will make you forget your physical fatigue!
In the afternoon you will visit the Jokhang Temple, the holy site in the hearts of Tibetan Buddhist devotees. "To go to Lhasa without visiting the Jokhang Temple is tantamount to never having been to Lhasa" — these are the words of the famous lama Nyima Tsering of the Jokhang Temple, and a view almost every traveler agrees with. The Jokhang Temple blends Tibetan, Tang, Nepalese, and Indian architectural styles, and is a timeless model of Tibetan religious architecture.
After leaving the Jokhang Temple, you can walk clockwise around the temple with the Jokhang at its center, imagining yourself as a Tibetan doing a kora, or you can shop to your heart's content at the handicraft market on Barkhor Street, or simply stroll slowly through the streets, feeling the warmth of the City of Sunlight, or find a sweet tea house and learn the tranquility and contentment of Tibetan friends.
