The Humble Administrator's Garden was first built in the fourth year of Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty (1509 AD) by Wang Xianchen, a censor who retired to Suzhou after frustration in officialdom, and took 16 years to complete. It is known for its ingenious layout, picturesque scenery, and exquisite architecture and carvings. It is mainly divided into three parts: the east, the middle and the west. The east is dominated by gentle ridges, distant hills, pine forests, lawns, bamboo groves and winding water, with beautiful scenery; the middle is the essence of the Humble Administrator's Garden, centered on water, with broad ponds and lush trees and natural scenery; the west has a curved-foot-shaped pond, with terraces and halls standing opposite each other, undulating corridors, reflections in the water, and very ornate and exquisite decoration, offering a distinctive charm. Strolling through it feels like traveling back to Jiangnan in the Ming and Qing dynasties, with scenery at every step, and every brick, tile, plant and tree revealing refinement and elegance. In addition, the Orchid Snow Hall, named after Li Bai's line "Standing alone between heaven and earth, clear wind scatters orchid snow"; the Fragrant Isle Hall, named after Zhou Dunyi's line in On the Love of the Lotus, "Its fragrance is more pure from afar, standing upright and clean"; and the Mountain Viewing Tower, named after Tao Yuanming's line "Picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, leisurely I see the southern mountains," are among the must-see sights in the Humble Administrator's Garden and deserve careful appreciation.
