Xining — Riyue Mountain and Daotang River (distant view) — Golmud

Today we officially begin our journey to explore no man's land. In the morning, we will depart from Xining for Golmud, passing by Riyue Mountain and Daotang River. Riyue Mountain is a natural plateau dividing line that separates the Loess Plateau from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and is also the dividing line between Qinghai's agricultural and pastoral areas. On the eastern side is the frontier pastoral scenery of interlaced farmland, while on the western side is the scene of plateau pastoral songs with herds of cattle and sheep. At the summit are the Sun Pavilion and Moon Pavilion. Daotang River gets its name because the river does not flow east but flows west. Immersed in the plateau scenery along the way, we arrive at Golmud. Deep in the hinterland of the plateau, Golmud is famous for its magnificent desert scenery. The towering Kunlun Mountains, the endless wilderness and gobi, the vigorous and upright populus euphratica forests, the ten-thousand-foot salt bridge of Qarhan Lake, and the Hoh Xil no man's land make people linger and forget to return.

Today's first stop is the Kunlun Mountain [Wuji Longfeng Palace]. At the foot of the majestic Kunlun Mountains, this large Taoist temple enshrining the Three Holy Mothers, the Queen Mother of the West, and others is also called the Temple of the Queen Mother of the West. With an elegant environment, backed by mountains and facing water, this flat immortal holy site attracts many devout believers to make pilgrimages. After a brief visit, continue to [Yuzhu Peak]. After a short stop here, head to the ancestor of all mountains, [Kunlun Mountain]. This is a sacred mountain of the Chinese nation. At the mountain pass there are several landmark structures, including an altitude monument, the tombstone of Sonam Dargye, and a sculpture protecting Tibetan antelopes. Next, you will travel by vehicle through the beautiful "Forbidden Zone of Life," [Hoh Xil]. Driving on the straight sky road leading to the horizon, along the way there are few people, the gobi is flat and straight, snow mountains stretch in the distance, and yaks and wild donkeys can be seen everywhere. This is the world's largest uninhabited area and also a paradise for wildlife. If you are lucky, you may also see the "plateau spirit" Tibetan antelope slowly crossing the road. Then return along the same route and stay in a Golmud hotel. Warm Tips 1. Departure is at about 6:30 in the morning. Please bring food and drinking water, as there are few supply points along the way. 2. The Kunlun Mountain Pass is at an altitude of 5,540 meters. It is recommended that you bring warm clothing and pay attention to altitude sickness.

Golmud—Mangya Emerald Lake—Aiken Spring (Devil's Eye)—Mangya

Departing from Golmud to Mangya, the first stop we will visit is 【Mangya Emerald Lake】, the purest mirror of the sky deep in Qaidam. The emerald-green lake water contains not a trace of impurity, with white salt flowers woven through it. Isn't this an emerald rough stone with natural cracks? As a niche attraction, Mangya Emerald Lake has not yet been visited by large numbers of tourists and retains its isolated beauty. Then we will head to 【"Devil's Eye" Aiken Spring】 (sightseeing time 1 hour), a hot spring that has been gushing for thousands of years in the hinterland of Aral Grassland. On the uninhabited Gobi desert, a spring gushes out. Around the hot spring are black, brown-red, and yellow sulfur water crystals. Viewed from the air, it looks very much like a bizarre blood-colored eye, so Aiken Spring is also called the "Devil's Eye." Aiken means terrifying in Mongolian. It is said that if you shout here, the louder the sound, the more the spring gushes. Warm Tips 1. Today's scenic area requires drone photography to better capture its mystery and shock. 2. On sunny days here, the light is very strong, and there is also reflection from the lake surface, so sun protection preparations are needed, and it is best to prepare a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. 3. Meals are not available in the scenic area, and shopping is not very convenient, so it is best to bring your own drinking water and dry food. 4. The Qaidam Basin is at an altitude of about 3,000 meters. Be careful not to engage in strenuous exercise to avoid altitude sickness. 5. Because the salt layer is relatively rough, walking barefoot can be somewhat painful, and the mud in the deeper parts of the lake is deep, so it is not recommended to walk too deep.

Depart in the morning to check in at the most beautiful G315 National Highway [U-shaped Internet-famous Road]. This road stretching to the horizon will bring you absolute awe, and many blockbuster shots come from here. When taking photos, be mindful of passing vehicles. The next attraction is the most breathtaking [Wusute Water Yardang]. Rich and varied yardang formations of different shapes are scattered throughout the lake. Viewed from above, the yardangs in the water all facing the same direction float majestically like warships awaiting deployment in the deep blue or emerald green lake water. This is also a paradise for waterfowl and wild ducks, which gather here in flocks, playing in the water, chasing, soaring, running, and resting, so it is also called the "Lake of a Hundred Birds and a Thousand Islands." Then pass by [West Taijinar Lake], which is split into deep blue and emerald green sections by a water highway crossing the lake, so it is also called the Two-Color Lake. Finally return to Da Qaidam for accommodation, passing [Nanbaxian Yardang] on the way, where long strip-shaped earth mounds and trenches alternate, with desolation as the keynote here. Golden rapeseed flowers begin to bloom from mid-July, spreading in turn from near to far in green, golden yellow, and blue, dotted with cattle, sheep, and prayer flags. All of it is beautiful.
