This morning, you will depart from Xiamen and drive about 150 kilometers (about 2.5 hours) to visit the Nanjing Tulou. There are over 15,000 surviving tulou in Nanjing, which are a typical representative of Fujian Hakka tulou and a treasure of Chinese residential architecture, known as "the world's unique mountain village dwellings." Among them, the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, the Hekeng Tulou Cluster, Huaiyuan Lou, and Hegui Lou were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008. Upon arrival, first visit the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster. First built in 1662, it is the settlement of the Huang clan of Hakka people. It is famous for its unique layout resembling "four dishes and one soup," making it the most recognizable landscape of Fujian tulou. It consists of 1 square building (Buyun Lou), 3 circular buildings (Hechang Lou, Zhenchang Lou, Ruiyun Lou), and 1 oval building (Wenchang Lou). These five tulou follow the layout of the mutual generation of the Five Elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth), and are praised as a "world architectural marvel" and an "outstanding representative of Chinese feng shui architecture." Recommended visiting route: Upper Viewing Platform (overlook the panorama of "four dishes and one soup," resembling "plum blossoms blooming" or "a flying saucer landing") → Buyun Lou (meaning "rising in the world," where you can overlook the daily life of the Hakka clan) → Hechang Lou/Zhenchang Lou/Ruiyun Lou (you can photograph the same courtyard perspective as in the movie "Big Fish & Begonia") → Wenchang Lou (the only oval tulou in Nanjing, meaning "flourishing literary fortune," where you can photograph the beautiful scene of tulou blending with terraced fields) → Lower Viewing Platform (look up at the tulou cluster and terraced fields, resembling the "Potala Palace") Lunch will feature delicious Hakka cuisine, allowing you to experience the local Hakka lifestyle. Twelve ancient tulou are scattered along both banks of the stream. Among them, Yuchang Lou is the key tulou we will visit. Built in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties (around 1308–1368), Yuchang Lou is one of the oldest surviving circular tulou in China and is hailed as the "Father of Fujian Tulou." It is also known for the pillars on the 3rd and 4th floors tilting 15° clockwise while those on the 5th floor tilt counterclockwise, creating the "leaning east and west" wonder. After more than 700 years of wind and rain, it remains stable and is called "China's No. 1 Marvelous Building." You can stroll through and admire the architectural wonder of "leaning east and west," observe the daily life of the Hakka people in the tulou up close, or chat with the Hakka residents to learn more fascinating tulou stories and unique folk culture. In addition, remember to taste a cup of oolong tea brewed by the locals—it is very sweet and refreshing. Afterward, head to the Hekeng Tulou Cluster. The Hekeng Tulou Cluster is one of the most densely concentrated World Cultural Heritage sites among Fujian tulou, famous for its unique "Big Dipper" layout and the architectural wonder of square and circular tulou interwoven. Among them, Chaoshui Lou (built during the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty, the oldest square tulou) and Yuxing Lou (a modern circular tulou) are highly representative and well worth seeing. Taxia Village is distributed along the stream in an "S" shape, with two circular tulou (Yude Lou and Shunchang Lou) on either side of the stream, resembling a taiji pattern, hence the name "Taiji Water Village." In addition, its picturesque environment, excellent air and spring water, and the healthy lifestyle of the villagers have earned it the reputation of a "Longevity Village." Moreover, 11 concrete bridges and some tulou in the village were funded and built by overseas Chinese, giving it a strong overseas Chinese hometown character. You can stroll and admire the picturesque ancient village scenery and the varied tulou architecture, among which Yude Lou (Weiqun Lou) and Deyuantang Zhang Clan Ancestral Hall (China's most complete group of 24 stone dragon flagpoles) are worth careful appreciation. This morning, you will depart from Nanjing Tulou and drive about 10 kilometers (about 20 minutes) to Yongding Tulou. Yongding has more than 23,000 existing Hakka tulou, far exceeding Nanjing Tulou in scale and number, ranking first in Fujian. It is the largest and oldest tulou cluster in China and even the world, known as the "Hometown of Tulou" and "Pearl of Eastern Architecture," and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008 as the main part of Fujian Tulou. In addition, you will have the chance to explore filming locations of the popular Chinese film Big Fish & Begonia, such as Chengqi Lou, the home of Chun. In the morning, first visit the Gaobei Tulou Cluster, known as the "Tulou King Scenic Area." This has been the settlement of the Jiang family since the Yuan Dynasty, one of the most representative tulou clusters in Yongding, Fujian, and a living museum of Hakka culture and architectural aesthetics. Among them, Chengqi Lou (first built during the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty, taking 81 years to complete, 73 meters in diameter, containing 400 rooms, known as the "Tulou King," once featured on a Chinese residential stamp, and the prototype of the "Divine Enclosure" in Big Fish & Begonia), Wuyun Lou (built during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, the oldest surviving tulou of the Jiang family; its wall leans 1.5 meters yet has stood for a century, so it is also called the "Unfallen Tower"), Shize Lou (a square tulou, with the typical Hakka communal layout of "one gate, two wells, three halls, four staircases"), and Qiaofu Lou (its ancestral hall is in a Chinese-Western architectural style, and because the family produced 11 PhDs it is called the "PhD Tower") are the essence of the Gaobei Tulou Cluster and worth careful appreciation. Excellent Photography Spots in the Gaobei Tulou Cluster 1. The spectacle of "square and round in a single line of sky" formed by the square Shize Lou and the round Chengqi Lou 2. The panoramic scenery beside the rice fields outside Chengqi Lou, with an even better atmosphere in the early morning or evening 3. In the afternoon, drive to Chuxi Tulou Cluster, the most primitive and most Hakka-culturally rich tulou cluster in Yongding, Fujian. Surrounded by mountains and water, terraced fields, and flowing streams, it is known as "China's most beautiful tulou cluster," with different charms in all four seasons. In March and April, you can enjoy golden rapeseed flower fields and charming spring tulou scenery; in September and October, you can enjoy intoxicating autumn harvest scenery. Among them, Jiqing Lou (built in 1419, one of the oldest surviving round tulou in Yongding, built entirely without a single iron nail using pure wooden mortise-and-tenon structure, with a unique design of 72 staircases), Shanqing Lou (donated by overseas Chinese in 1979, its white exterior walls stand out uniquely among the tulou cluster, and it is a rare single-ring round tulou with no interior buildings), Gengqing Lou (built in 1849, only 33 meters in diameter and 3 stories high, with three rammed-earth partition walls as a major feature), and Shengqing Lou (a square tulou composed of two square tulou, one inside and one outside) are the most representative tulou buildings in the Chuxi Tulou Cluster, allowing you to enjoy the tulou scenery of "three round and one square." Morning mist or sunset is the best time for photography, and the scenery is best in autumn when the rice waves turn golden. Early this morning, you can visit Nanputuo Temple, known as the "Buddhist holy site of Minnan," and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere before the crowds arrive. Nanputuo Temple was first built in the late Tang and Five Dynasties, with a history of over a thousand years. It is one of Fujian's most famous temples, the birthplace of the Minnan Buddhist Academy, and one of China's four major Guanyin pilgrimage sites. Influenced by Minnan overseas Chinese culture, it is highly favored in Southeast Asia. There is even a folk legend of blessing: "Walk to Nanputuo for one year, avoid suffering for three years." Incense burns all year round. You can stroll and admire the serene temple scenery, check in at the Great Compassion Hall (a model of Minnan Buddhist architectural art, with red bricks, glazed tiles, and octagonal triple eaves being the most exquisite), the Sutra Library (housing a Ming Wanli blood-written Lotus Sutra), and other magnificent and exquisite Buddhist buildings. Today, our professional guide will arrange the most suitable photography locations for you based on actual weather and tide conditions. This afternoon, you will go to Xiaohao Village, about 20 kilometers from Xiapu County, for photography. Xiaohao Village is one of the best representatives of Xiapu's mudflat scenery and an excellent spot for sunset shots. Its sandy mudflats, under tidal washing and light refraction, create a colorful "neon" effect, called "flowing oil painting" by the photography world. It has different light and shadow changes throughout the year, and the sunset scene of mudflats reflecting rosy clouds is listed by National Geographic as a classic shooting location. This is also the main scenery we will photograph today. In addition, you may capture mudflat textures under front and backlighting, fishermen at work, and marine aquaculture scenes. Xiaohao Village Sunset Photography Tips 1. Shooting location: Climb to the top of the hill along the dirt road to capture breathtaking panoramic sunset views, overlooking the mudflats, fishing boats, and distant mountains; if lucky, you can also capture flocks of egrets in flight. 2. Best months: March to May and September to October are the golden periods for photography in Xiaohao Village, Xiapu. Spring has soft light and shadow, while autumn is clear with few clouds. 3. Shooting tips: Wide-angle (16-35mm) is suitable for panoramas; medium telephoto (80-200mm) is suitable for fishermen at work or local textures; long telephoto (200-400mm) can compress the layers of fishing boats, mudflats, and distant mountains, highlighting geometric lines. Huazhu Village is the filming location used by China Central Television many times for live broadcasts of the "first ray of sunshine" on New Year's Day/National Day, and is known as "China's landmark for watching the sun." At sunrise, the sea surface sparkles with golden light, and the Fuyao Archipelago appears indistinct in the morning mist, like a mirage, earning it the reputation of a "fairyland of sunrise over the sea." Standing there, you can photograph the stunning sunrise over the sea, the silhouettes of the Fuyao Archipelago, the light and shadow of fishing rafts, and other multi-layered mountain-and-sea scenery. Huazhu Village sunrise photography tips 1. Afterward, head to Xiaqingshan Grand Bridge to enjoy the unique scenery of a fishing village on the sea and the magnificent wonder of sunset, and experience "sea Gypsy" culture. This is one of the photography holy sites along the coast of eastern Fujian, China, known as the "Venice of the Sea photography destination." This morning, rise early and head to Weijiang Village, known as the "Chinese version of Sri Lanka," to capture the enchanting sunrise spectacle. Weijiang Village is a coastal fishing village with more than 400 years of history. Offshore from the village is an isolated island shaped like a steamed bun, called "Mantou Mountain" by the locals. At low tide, a natural channel about 600 meters long is exposed on the tidal flat connecting it to the land, resembling the handle of a strainer when viewed from afar, hence it is also called "Zhaoli Islet." It is the landmark landscape of Weijiang Village. Tips for photographing the sunrise at Weijiang Village 1. Highlights: sunrise light and shadow on Mantou Mountain, pastoral scenery on the sea, tidal flat textures, fishermen at work (harvesting kelp, sorting fishing nets, etc.). 2. Shooting locations: the Mantou Mountain Viewing Platform allows you to shoot a panorama of Mantou Mountain from above—like a floating island at high tide, and after low tide the exposed tidal flat presents a unique "top hat" landform; the tidal flat area around Mantou Mountain is ideal for photographing breathtaking tidal flat scenery and geometric lines. Afterward, head to Ban Yueli Village, a Chinese ethnic minority characteristic village. Ban Yueli Village is a She ethnic ancient village with more than 300 years of history.
