The Zhangye Rainbow Danxia Scenic Area is located at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains, 230 km southeast of Jiayuguan. It is one of China's seven most beautiful Danxia landforms and has been honored as one of the "Top Ten Magical Geographical Wonders of the World" and "one of the world's twenty-two most unforgettable landscapes." Its majesty, spectacular scale, peculiar shapes, and brilliant colors are unparalleled; standing amid it feels like stepping into a colorful fairy-tale world. The scenic area has 4 viewing platforms, with shuttle buses running between them. The shuttle route from the North Gate is: Rainbow Fairyland Platform (No. 2) → Rainbow Sea of Clouds Platform (No. 1) → Rainbow Splendor Platform (No. 5) → Rainbow Rosy Clouds Platform (No. 4). Among them, Platform No. 1 (the largest viewing platform in the scenic area, offering a panoramic view of the Danxia and the S-shaped road, and the best spot for photographing sunrise) and Platform No. 4 (the most brilliantly colored, where at sunset the Danxia under the evening glow looks like a "mountain of knives and sea of fire," called by visitors "pork belly mountain") are most recommended. If time permits, optional places to visit Zhangye World Geopark Museum (closed on Mondays): A science education base for understanding Danxia landforms and the geological evolution of the Qilian Mountains. At sunrise, the light is soft, the colors are vivid, and the contrast is high, making it an excellent time to photograph the panoramic rainbow mountains and their delicate textures. At sunset, the warm afterglow falls on the hills, forming golden silhouettes, also an excellent time to capture the beauty of the rainbow mountains. Another best time to appreciate the Danxia landforms is after rain, when the colors become even more vivid and enchanting due to moisture. 3. Early this morning, you can get up and go to the Seven-Color Danxia Scenic Area to watch the magnificent sunrise (optional, at your own expense). Afterwards, you will visit the Great Buddha Temple. The Great Buddha Temple, also known as "Reclining Buddha Temple," was first built in the first year of Yong'an of the Western Xia Dynasty (1098 AD). It has a history of more than 900 years and is one of the four existing royal temples in China. Inside the temple is the largest indoor clay reclining Buddha in China and even Asia. The Buddha is about 34.5 meters long and about 7.5 meters wide at the shoulders; even a person could lie flat on just one finger. In addition to the great Buddha, the hall also contains many Buddhist statues such as the Ten Great Disciples and the Eighteen Arhats, as well as murals of stories from Journey to the West and Classic of Mountains and Seas for you to admire. In addition, the couplet outside the Great Buddha Hall—"The sleeping Buddha sleeps long, sleeping for a thousand years and never waking; the questioner forever asks, asking for a hundred generations and still finding it hard to understand"—is worth careful observation. There is also a couplet with the same content in Western Xia script. Remember to ask the guide to explain the differences between its stroke structure and Chinese characters. Moreover, cultural relics such as Persian silver coins unearthed in the temple further confirm the prosperity of Silk Road trade. Note: At present, significant progress has been made in the digital restoration of the reclining Buddha statue at Zhangye Great Buddha Temple. The opening time of the digital exhibition hall is subject to official notice. Once open, you can gain an in-depth understanding of the historical and cultural background of the reclining Buddha through an immersive experience. After the tour, go to Badain Jaran Town to rest.

After breakfast, you will take a roughly 1-hour drive to explore the Badain Jaran Desert. Covering an area of about 47,000 square kilometers, the Badain Jaran Desert is China's third-largest desert and the world's fourth-largest, renowned for its "five wonders": towering sand dunes, singing sand dunes, vibrant lakes, miraculous springs, and ancient temples. It is hailed as "China's most beautiful desert" and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024 as the "Badain Jaran Desert—Towers of Sand and Lakes." Today's itinerary will be adjusted according to current conditions. You may choose to hike or take a thrilling jeep tour, weaving through sand dunes at an elevation of about 1,200 to 1,700 meters, and savor the charm of this "desert empire" full of extreme contrasts and the rhythm of life. Highlights of the Badain Jaran Desert 1. Dagetu Red Lake: Also known as "Red Sea," it is one of the most famous lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert. Its colors are most intense in summer, and it has been described as "the tears of a rose in the desert," creating a surreal visual impact against the surrounding golden sand mountains. 2. Bilutu Peak: At about 1,611 meters above sea level with a relative height of nearly 500 meters, it is the world's tallest sand mountain, worthy of the title "Everest of the Desert." Climbing to the top offers a peerless view of countless lakes scattered like gemstones. 3. Yinderitu Spring: Yinderitu Lake is a saltwater lake, yet on the stone island rising from its waters, there are 108 springs. The most famous is "Millstone Spring," whose water is sweet and fresh—a natural miracle revered by locals as a "sacred spring." 4. Badain Jaran Temple: By the shore of Miao Haizi (Badain Jaran Lake), the Badain Jaran Temple with its red walls and golden roof has stood quietly for over 300 years. Featuring exquisite murals, it is a holy site of Tibetan Buddhism. Together with the surrounding sand and lake, it forms a silent and sacred scene—the very soul of the desert. 5. Singing Sand Phenomenon: Known as the "world's kingdom of singing sand," when you slide down the sand mountains or when the wind moves the sand, the dunes emit a tremendous roar—like an airplane passing overhead, like rolling thunder, or like the tolling of bells and drums. It is a veritable auditory feast, truly awe-inspiring. Today's itinerary may follow the eastern route: visiting the Desert Geopark Museum, Dagetu Red Lake, Yinderitu Spring, Bilutu Peak, and other landmark attractions. If there is a lake reflecting it, the water color is saturated with rosy clouds, forming a fantasy of half flame and half glass, breathtakingly beautiful. Afterwards, you will drive about 57 kilometers (about 1 hour) to visit [Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon], known as a "living geological history textbook". Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon is located northeast of Zhangye City, in the transition zone between the Corridor Plain and the Inner Mongolia Plateau, and is an important passage from the Hexi Corridor to Inner Mongolia. After hundreds of millions of years of wind and rain erosion, the canyon has formed a landscape interwoven with Danxia, Yardang, and canyon landforms. It is famous for its desolate and magnificent red rock formations and has been evaluated as "comparable to Zhangjiajie" and "rivaling the Grand Canyon of Colorado", with the title "China's Colorado". It is not only a shocking geological wonder on the Silk Road but also one of the most charming attractions in the Qinghai-Gansu tourism loop. Especially under sunlight, the canyon rock layers become colorful, described as a "mysterious world like an alien planet". Recommended Activities: You can overlook the spectacular grand canyon from the viewing platform, go deep into the canyon bottom to feel the beauty of nature's craftsmanship, or check in at One-Line Sky, climb the cloud ladder, and other special experiences. Shanxi Guild Hall: First built in the second year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1724), it was built with donations from Shanxi merchants Zhao Shigui, Zhao Jiyu, Zhang Chaozhu, and others, with a history of over 300 years. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Shanxi merchants built about 400 guild halls across the country, covering Tibet, Xinjiang, and other places, confirming the proverb "Wherever business is prosperous, there must be Shanxi merchants; where Shanxi merchants live, there must be guild halls." It features the Guandi Temple and the theater tower. 2. Zhangye Museum (closed on Mondays): The museum has over 10,000 cultural relics, covering various historical artifacts from prehistoric to Qing Dynasty, with a wide variety, including bronzes, pottery, jade, and cultural relics of the Silk Road. In addition, the museum has a 1:1 replica cave of the Jinta Temple Grottoes for you to appreciate.

This morning, you will drive to the Mati Temple Grottoes (about 60 km, roughly a 2-hour drive). The Mati Temple Grottoes are located at the foot of the snow-capped Qilian Mountains amid secluded pine valleys. They were carved during the Northern Liang period of the Sixteen Kingdoms (397-439 AD), more than 1,600 years ago, and are as famous as the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and the Guazhou Yulin Caves, collectively known as the "Three Great Art Treasures of the Hexi Buddhist Holy Land." They are an unmissable Buddhist art relic of the Hexi Corridor. The grotto complex is set into the Danxia cliffs and stretches for dozens of kilometers, a spectacular sight. More than 70 existing niches and caves bear traces of construction from multiple dynasties, including Northern Liang, Northern Wei, Sui-Tang, Western Xia, Yuan, Ming, and Qing. In the same space, you can see the elegant statues of Han Buddhism and the richly colored murals of Tibetan Buddhism—a living fossil of Han-Tibetan cultural exchange. Entering Mati Temple, the most breathtaking sight is the Thirty-Three Heavens Grottoes "hanging" on the cliff face, with seven levels above and below and 21 caves in total. Climbing through them feels like traveling through a three-dimensional Buddhist hall, offering the adventure of "caves within caves and Buddhas hidden inside caves." Its thrilling and extraordinary nature is unique among Chinese grottoes. The statues and murals inside are brilliantly colored and exquisitely crafted, silently telling of a thousand years of vicissitudes. Reaching the summit, you can overlook the magnificent scenery of the Qilian Mountains, and in summer you can see the wonder of "grottoes suspended in air" where snow-capped mountains and grasslands meet.
