Transit Visa-Free Stay Extended to 240 Hours: 10 Days to Explore China at Ease
Starting December 17, 2024, China's visa-free transit stay is extended from the previous 72 and 144 hours to a unified 240 hours (10 days), with a simultaneous expansion of applicable ports, provinces, and countries of origin, giving travelers transiting through China more time to stay.
For many international travelers transiting through China, a long-standing regret has been that "there's too little time"—the original 72-hour or 144-hour transit visa-free stay was often only enough for a fleeting glimpse of the port city. This situation saw a major change in December 2024.
Policy Core: Uniform Extension to 240 Hours
Starting from December 17, 2024, China will uniformly extend the stay duration for visa-free transit to240 hours, or 10 days. At the same time, the policy is expanded simultaneously in three dimensions:
- Applicable ports: increased from 39 to 60, with 21 new ports added;
- Applicable provinces: increased from 19 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) to 24;
- Eligible countries: open to citizens of more than 50 countries.
The scope of permitted stay and activities has been further expanded
In addition to the relaxation of time limits and ports of entry, the visa-free transitareas where stay and activities are permittedalso expanded significantly:
- Anhui, Hainan, and Guizhou provinces achievedprovince-widestay activities;
- Shanxi added Taiyuan and Datong, and Jiangxi added Nanchang and Jingdezhen;
- the stay activity areas of Fujian, Hubei, and Shaanxi expanded toProvince-wide;
- The permitted stay area in Guangxi has been expanded to 12 prefecture-level cities.
Further improvements in 2025
Entering 2025, the visa-free transit policy continued to be optimized: Indonesia was newly added as an applicable country for the 240-hour visa-free transit, and 5 new ports in Guangdong were added as applicable ports for the policy,bringing the total number of applicable ports for the policy to 65Ports including Guangzhou Pazhou, Hengqin, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Zhongshan Port, and West Kowloon Station have also been included in the scope of the 240-hour visa-free transit, further facilitating travelers entering from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao direction.
What It Means for Transit Passengers
A 240-hour stay is enough to upgrade a "convenient transit stop" into a complete short trip. Travelers can leisurely arrange city sightseeing, cultural experiences, and leisure vacations in and around the transit city, turning what was once tedious waiting into an unexpected delight of the journey. For travelers planning to pass through China en route to a third country, "leaving at a moment's notice and staying a few extra days" is becoming truly feasible.
A ten-day stay window means China is no longer just a stop along the flight route, but can become the destination of a journey itself.
