"Linking Foreign Cards" and "Using Foreign Wallets": Smoother Payments in China for Overseas Travelers
Mobile payment was once a major hurdle for foreign travelers in China. With measures such as linking foreign cards to domestic payment apps and enabling overseas e-wallets for domestic use, foreign bank cards and e-wallets can now be used more smoothly within China, and QR code payments are becoming increasingly widespread.
For many foreign travelers, the first thing they need to figure out upon landing in China is often "how to pay." In recent years, with the continuous advancement of measures to facilitate mobile payments, "scanning your way through China" is turning from a wish into the norm.
Two main convenience models
- "Binding foreign cards to domestic apps": Overseas travelers can register for commonly used domestic payment apps using their overseas mobile phone numbers and bind their overseas bank cards, with support for multiple major international card networks;
- "Using foreign wallets domestically": Directly use overseas e-wallets to make QR code payments at domestic merchants, already covering dozens of overseas wallets from multiple countries and regions.
Increased transaction limits
To meet the spending needs of overseas travelers in China, the transaction limits for mobile payments have been significantly raised: the single-transaction limit has been increased to USD 5,000, and the annual cumulative transaction limit to USD 50,000. Along with optimized card-linking procedures and identity verification, the payment experience is now smoother.
Expanding coverage of scenarios
- Payment service demonstration zones have been set up at airports, making it easy for travelers to use them right after landing;
- More and more merchants accept foreign cards, covering business districts, restaurants, scenic areas, and more;
- In some cities, foreign passengers can tap overseas bank cards to ride rail transit;
- Foreign currency exchange is now basically available at key airports, high-star hotels, and major tourist attractions.
Advice for Travelers
Before departure, it is advisable to download and register commonly used mobile payment apps and link your overseas bank card. After arriving in China, you can learn about practical payment guidance at service points in airports or hotels. As "scan to pay" has become the main payment method, preparing for payments in advance will make your trip more worry-free.
