Urumqi Travel Guide

Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains and the southern edge of the Junggar Basin. It was an important town on the new northern route of the ancient Silk Road and is the site of the geographic center of the Asian continent. As Xinjiang's transportation hub and gateway city, it is the starting point for trips to Kanas, the Ili grasslands, and Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains.

Here the lives and cuisines of Han, Uygur, Kazakh, and other ethnic groups converge, with snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and urban life blending amid the everyday bustle, making it the first stop for inbound travelers to get to know Xinjiang.

Suggested Itinerary

Classic two-day tour: on day one, visit Hongshan Park, the International Grand Bazaar, and the Xinjiang Museum; on day two, head to Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains. A three-day tour can add Nanshan Pasture or the Tianshan Grand Canyon, and serve as the departure point for a northern Xinjiang loop.

Travel Tips

Xinjiang is vast and attractions are far apart, so allow ample time in the car; summer UV rays are strong and the temperature difference between day and night is large, so bring sun protection and a jacket; the local area uses Beijing time, but daily rhythms run later and the sun sets late.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Ideas

At dawn, go to Hongshan Park and overlook the city alongside locals doing morning exercises; in the afternoon, try a bowl of yogurt and listen to folk music in a teahouse at the Grand Bazaar; in the evening, wander the Erdaoqiao night market in search of grilled meats; you can also go deep into a yurt at Nanshan Pasture to experience Kazakh milk tea and song and dance.

One-Day Trips Nearby

Tianchi Lake in the Tianshan Mountains — alpine lake and snow mountains; Nanshan Pasture — grassland horseback riding and snow mountains; Tianshan Grand Canyon — canyon scenery on the city outskirts; Dabancheng — wind turbines and gobi; you can also extend to Turpan, Kanas, or Ili.
