Lhasa-Yamdrok Lake–Tashilhunpo Monastery-Shigatse

Depart in the morning to begin the Ngari journey. Cross the Gambala Snow Mountain at an elevation of 4,990 meters, view the Gambala Radar Station from afar, and follow the old road to the world's highest freshwater lake — Yamdrok Lake (lake surface elevation 4,441 meters, shoreline 250 kilometers, area 638 square kilometers). In Tibetan, it means "Jade Lake," and together with Namtso and Lake Manasarovar, it is known as one of the "Three Great Sacred Lakes." Yamdrok Lake has many branching inlets like coral branches. It is a plateau barrier lake and the largest inland lake on the northern slope of the Himalayas. Finally, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of successive Panchen Lamas. Built in 1447, it is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school and the traditional seat of successive Panchen Erdenis. In the evening, arrive at Shigatse for overnight accommodation.

Shigatse-Mount Everest Nature Reserve-Base Camp

After breakfast, depart from Shigatse and head to the Mount Everest Nature Reserve. Passing through [Gawula Pass] at an elevation of 5200 meters, you can see the spectacular sight of 4 snow-capped mountains over 8000 meters arranged in a row. From left to right, these four snow mountains are: Makalu (8463 meters); Lhotse (8516 meters); Mount Everest (8848 meters); Cho Oyu (8201 meters). Then take the eco-friendly bus to [Everest Base Camp] for free time, experiencing the magnificence of nature. If lucky, you may also see the Everest banner cloud drifting like a flame of life. Overnight at Everest Base Camp, where you can see face to face the majestic posture of the world's highest peak—Mount Everest, at an elevation of 8844 meters.

Mount Everest Nature Reserve - Saga

In the morning, set off from Everest Base Camp and drive along National Highway 3108. After passing Old Tingri County and having lunch, drive to the most breathtaking glacier group in the Himalayas - the Shishapangma Glacier Group. 【Shishapangma】stands at 8,012 meters above sea level and is the only 8,000-meter peak entirely within China among the world's 14 peaks over 8,000 meters. The most fascinating part is the ice tower zone between 5,000 and 5,800 meters, static and graceful, like a glacier garden. Under the sunlight, Shishapangma is covered in white snow, a magnificent sight. Then drive toward Saga, passing Lalongla Mountain along the way to reach 【Peiku Tso】. It is the largest lake in Shigatse Prefecture, about 300 square kilometers, with various unique Tibetan plateau species along its shores. Everywhere you can see rare sunbirds, langurs, and wildlife, either in groups or alone. Overnight in Saga. Altitude 4,500 meters.

Saga-Zhongba-Mount Kailash-Baga (Tarchen)

In the morning, depart from Saga for the sacred mountain, the sacred lake, and the ghost lake. Along the way, you will view Lengbu Gangri Peak from afar, at an altitude of 7,095 meters. After passing through Zhongba, you will arrive in Paryang. First, visit 【Lake Manasarovar】, the freshwater lake with the greatest water transparency in China. In Tibetan, it means "invincible, victory." It is known as the "Sacred Lake," the "Holy Lake," and the "Mother of the World's Rivers." The lake water is emerald-clear, with a transparency of 14 meters. The lake has a mineralization degree of 400 mg/L and is a freshwater lake, containing trace elements such as boron, lithium, and fluorine. Every summer and autumn, Buddhists come here with their young and old to make pilgrimages, bathing and cleansing themselves in the "holy water" to "prolong life." 【Rakshastal】 means "the poisonous black lake." It is commonly called the Ghost Lake. Its scenery is equally beautiful, and its water is equally intoxicatingly blue, yet it has been labeled with the ominous name "Ghost Lake" and relegated to a separate category. In fact, the sacred lake and the ghost lake were originally one lake. Due to climate change, the lake shrank and the water level dropped, and only then were the two separated by a long, narrow hill. It is said that the bottoms of Lake Manasarovar and Rakshastal are connected: on one side is the freshwater sacred lake, and on the other is the saltwater ghost lake. The area between the two lakes is the only route in and out of Burang County. At noon, have lunch at a restaurant in Paryang. After lunch, pass through the Mayou Bridge Border Checkpoint to reach Tarchen, the small town at the sacred Mount Kailash. In the evening, stay overnight in Tarchen Town at the foot of the sacred 【Mount Kailash】.

Baga (Tarchen)-Zanda-Guge Kingdom Ruins-Tholing Monastery

In the morning, set off from Mount Kailash in the glow of the morning sun, passing through the Zanda Earth Forest on the way to Zanda to visit the Ruins of the Guge Kingdom. The road conditions are rather rough, with some sections under repair. After lunch in Zanda, head to the majestic Guge Royal Palace (Guge Kingdom). The Ruins of the Guge Kingdom are an ancient highland city, located on a hill by the Xiangquan River in the Zhiburang area of Zanda, Ngari, covering about 180,000 square meters. The entire site comprises over 300 houses and caves, 3 stupas (over 10 meters tall), 4 temples, 2 halls, and 2 underground tunnels, divided into upper, middle, and lower levels, which were respectively the royal palace, temples, and residences. After the tour, return to Zanda County town along the same route. Visit Tholing Monastery, with a history of over 900 years. The monastery blends Indian Kashmiri, Ladakhi, and Nepalese styles in both its architecture and Buddhist statues. Overnight in Zanda.

Zanda County - Shiquanhe

After enjoying the sunrise over the Guge Kingdom hidden in the dust of history deep within the earth forest, return to Zanda for lunch, then head to the starting point of the northern route—Shiquanhe, called Sengge Zangbo in Tibetan. It is the upper source of the Indus River and one of the major rivers in western Tibet Autonomous Region. It originates from a glacial lake on the north side of Mount Kailash, the main peak of the Gangdise Mountains, flows from south to north until near Bangba, then turns west, passes through Geji, merges with Gar Zangbo near Zhaxigang, turns northwest, and flows into the Kashmir region. Shiquanhe Town (Gar): Located at the junction of Shiquanhe and the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway, it is the central town of Ngari Prefecture.

Shiquanhe - Geji - Renduo Township

From today on, you will drive onto a true wilderness, a desolate, mysterious and lonely no-man's land; it is also the most essential part of the Great Northern Route. Countless lakes are hidden in this rarely visited land, and the stunning "lake after lake" spectacle is unfolding before us. After stocking up on plenty of dry rations and instant noodles, set off from Shiquanhe and arrive at Geji (altitude 4,800 meters), known as the Roof of the World. Then head south through Yare (altitude 5,300 meters) to Renduo Township (altitude 5,000 meters), traveling entirely on bumpy, hard-to-navigate gravel washboard roads. What you see is vast, boundless wilderness and wasteland, endless mountain peaks and white clouds, occasional oases and flocks of sheep, and antelopes and wild donkeys racing alongside the vehicle. Arrive at Renduo Township in the evening, now deep in the heart of Ngari in northern Tibet. Overnight in a simple Tibetan village.

Renduo–Anglaren Co–Renqingxiubu Co–Taro Co - Coqên

Wake up with the first rays of dawn over the Changtang grasslands, eat some self-prepared dry rations, and then continue onward. Yesterday's scenery was merely a prelude; today's wonders will be even more stunning. After departing from Rindo Township, you will pass: 【Angla Ringco】 (4,700 meters above sea level): a lake hailed by locals as a earthly paradise; 【Renqing Xiubu Co】 (4,700 meters above sea level): a magical large lake whose scenery changes depending on the viewing angle; Taro Co (4,566 meters above sea level): with a rarely seen red lake color; 【Zabuye Salt Lake】 (4,421 meters above sea level): the most stunning and mysterious plateau salt lake, and the world's third-largest lithium mining area. In addition, there are many small lakes. Although they are not famous and may not even have names, they are equally enchanting. In the evening, arrive in Coqên County (4,600 meters above sea level) and stay overnight in a Tibetan village in Coqên.

Magnificent Lake Blue–Zhari Namco, Tangra Yumco–Wenbu South Village

After breakfast, set off from Coqên to Zhari Namco (elevation 4,600 meters). Zhari Namco is the third-largest lake in Tibet, a fault lake, and a saltwater lake. The Tibetan meaning of Coqên is "great lake," and it is named precisely because of Zhari Namco. After leaving Zhari Namco and having a simple roadside lunch, continue east to Tangra Yumco (elevation 4,600 meters). Tangra Yumco is the largest sacred lake worshipped by Tibet's original Bon religion, and also the most moving lake on the northern Tibetan plateau. Its surface resembles a vajra, surrounded by mountains on all sides. In the minds of Tibetans, Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, Dargo Snow Mountain and Tangra Yumco, and Nyainqêntanglha and Namtso are ranked as Tibet's three great sacred mountains and lakes. Drive along the shore of Tangra Yumco to reach Wenbu South Village, a village isolated from the world. A peach blossom spring surrounded by snow mountains and lakes, it is the soul of this northern Tibetan land, called by travelers the "most Tibetan" place, the "dwelling of the gods." At sunset, the fiery clouds filling the sky create a breathtaking scene.

Wenbu South Village-Dangqung Co-Nyima County

In the early morning, depart from the quiet Wenbu South Village, experiencing the extraordinary beauty of colorful clouds illuminating Ngari. Heading north for about 40 kilometers, you will arrive at [Dangqiong Co]. Dangqiong Co was once the same large lake as Dangra Yumco, but later climate change and falling water levels divided it into two. By the lakeside is another ancient village—Wenbu North Village, as peaceful and serene as Wenbu South Village. Make a brief stop in Wenbu North Village for lunch, then set off northward after the meal to arrive at Nyima County—the youngest county in Tibet.

Nyima County-Baingoin County

In the early morning, set off from Nyima County, the youngest county, to 【Siling Tso】 (altitude 4,500 meters), the second largest lake in Tibet. In Tibetan, Siling Tso means "Devil Lake Reflecting Majestic Light," and like Angla Ring Tso, it is a ghost lake. Despite its seemingly terrifying name, what you see is blue lake water, herds of cattle and sheep, and a scene of highland pastures. After finding a spot by Siling Tso for a roadside lunch, continue onward and you will see many unnamed lakes large and small (Wuru Tso, Guogen Tso, Bange Tso, etc.), which were once part of Siling Tso. Then drive all the way to Bange County town (altitude 4,750 meters). Overnight in Bange County town. Tip: Tibetan antelopes and other wildlife are very afraid of people. Please do not frighten them, and do not let the driver chase them; just take photos from a distance.

Baingoin-Namtso

In the morning, after driving out of Baingoin County town, enjoy the beautiful alpine grassland scenery along the Nyainqêntanglha Mountains, gradually approaching the last major lake of the itinerary: 【Namtso】 (4,700 meters above sea level). In Tibetan, it means "Heavenly Lake." Legend says the lake water is the tears shed by a fairy at the feet of the Nyainqêntanglha mountain god. It is the highest-altitude saltwater lake in the world and the second-largest in China. To the south is the perpetually snow-capped Nyainqêntanglha Mountains, and to the north and west are plateau hills. Gently close your eyes and try to immerse yourself in it. At noon, dine in the Namtso scenic area. In the evening, watch the afterglow of the sunset and camp by the lakeside. The night at Namtso is very pure, and the sky is so low it seems you can touch the stars by raising your hand. Although it is relatively cold by the lake, the waves roll endlessly and the sounds of nature are serene, making one feel attached and enjoy a relaxed and pleasant night. Tip: Accommodation at Namtso is in simple prefabricated board houses by the lake. The altitude is high, so please take care to keep warm at night.

Namtso-Lhasa

In the morning, enjoy the snow mountains along the lakeshore and the pure waters of Namtso, quietly awaiting the first ray of dawn. The vast lakeshore is surrounded by grasslands with lush water and grass; the lake water has a high salt content, and the basin is rich in wildlife resources, including wild yaks and goats; the lake abounds with wildfowl and produces scale fish and scaleless fish; the water is crystal clear, complementing the surrounding snow mountains, with beautiful scenery; like a sparkling pearl inlaid on the vast Qiangtang grassland, the picturesque scenery makes one linger, truly a paradise for photography enthusiasts. When passing through the Lhachen La Pass, look back once more at Namtso, as the journey of lake after lake is about to end. On the return trip, admire the snow peaks of Nyainqêntanglha again, with colorful prayer flags fluttering on the northern Tibetan grasslands and the spectacular Qinghai-Tibet Highway. End the journey and arrive in Lhasa.
