It was rated by Chinese National Geography as "the first of China's five most beautiful lakes" and selected for the list of "55 places you must visit in your lifetime." Its deep blue and boundless lake water is surrounded by large expanses of golden rapeseed flowers and continuous green grasslands, dotted with colorful prayer flags and leisurely grazing cattle and sheep. This is Qinghai Lake's unique rich and colorful beauty of sky and water merging into one. (PS: The best viewing period for Qinghai Lake's rapeseed flowers and grasslands: July to August) After arriving at Qinghai Lake, you will visit Erlangjian Scenic Area, one of Qinghai Lake's famous attractions. Here, you can closely feel the rippling blue waves of Qinghai Lake, enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and sky merging into one color, and also immersively explore rich cultural heritage such as Tibetan cultural symbols and the legend of Queen Mother of the West. After breakfast, you will drive about 4 km (about 10 minutes) from Chaka Town to visit Chaka Salt Lake Scenic Area. 【Chaka Salt Lake】is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese salt culture, with a salt industry history dating back to the Western Han Dynasty. The entire salt lake is set amid snow-capped peaks and green meadows. It is a saltwater lake where water and salt perfectly blend, beautiful in all seasons—rippling blue waves in summer, vast and desolate in winter. The lake surface is as clear as a mirror, reflecting blue skies, white clouds, and snow-capped mountains, earning it the reputation of "China's Mirror of the Sky." You can climb the viewing platform to overlook the panorama of Chaka Salt Lake. If interested, take some time to explore the world's largest outdoor salt sculpture art group—the Salt Sculptures—to learn about Chaka's history and culture; or leisurely stroll in the salt lake above the clouds, fully experiencing the wonder of "water reflects sky, sky meets earth, people walk in the lake as if touring a painting." For a more immersive experience, you can also take a retro mini-train, following the tracks deep into the heart of the lake, placing yourself in a world of salt. After lunch, you will head to the area with the largest, best-developed, and most richly shaped Danxia landforms in China - Zhangye Qicai Danxia. Zhangye Qicai Danxia Scenic Area is located at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains, 230 kilometers southeast of Jiayuguan. It is one of China's seven most beautiful Danxia landforms and has titles such as "one of the world's top ten magical geographical wonders" and "one of the world's twenty-two most unforgettable landscapes." Its majesty, spectacular scale, peculiar shapes, and brilliant colors are unparalleled. Standing within it is like walking into a colorful fairy-tale world. The scenic area has four viewing platforms, with shuttle buses running between them. The shuttle route from the North Gate is: Qicai Xianyuan Platform (No. 2) -> Qicai Yunhai Platform (No. 1) -> Qicai Jinxiu Platform (No. 5) -> Qicai Hongxia Platform (No. 4). Among them, the most recommended are Platform No. 1 (the largest viewing platform in the scenic area, offering a panoramic view of the Danxia landforms and the S-shaped road, and the best place to photograph the sunrise) and Platform No. 4 (the most brilliant colors; at sunset, the Danxia under the glow looks like a "mountain of knives and sea of fire," called "pork belly mountain" by visitors). Travel tips 1. At sunrise, the light is soft, the colors are vivid, and the contrast is high, making it an excellent time to photograph the panoramic rainbow mountains and their delicate textures. At sunset, the setting sun casts warm afterglow on the hills, forming golden silhouettes, also an excellent time to capture the beauty of the rainbow mountains. If you want to capture the sunrise scenery, please confirm with your travel consultant about staying overnight at a hotel near the rainbow mountains. 2. Today, you will fully explore Jiayuguan, known as the "First and Greatest Pass under Heaven." The 【Jiayuguan Pass】 was historically called the throat of the Hexi Corridor. Due to its strategic terrain and magnificent architecture, it was known as the "Key to the Frontier" and was a vital transportation hub on the ancient Silk Road, as well as the western starting point of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. First, visit the Jiayuguan Fort. The Jiayuguan Fort was first built in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372). It is the first pass at the western end of the Ming Great Wall and the most spectacular fort along the entire Great Wall. It is not just a single pass but is divided into an inner city, outer city, and moat. From the Xiongguan Water Fort in the outer city, you can photograph the exterior of the fort. Entering the inner city and climbing the tower, you can see the Qilian Mountains. There are also many stalls in the scenic area, offering costume photography, calligraphy, and paintings. In addition, you can experience the old customs clearance procedures here (optional, at your own expense), obtaining a "passport" issued by the armored "pass commander" at the city gate exit, which is the permit for entering and exiting the pass. Afterward, visit the Overhanging Great Wall, hailed as the "end of the Great Wall." The Overhanging Great Wall was built during the Ming Dynasty, about 500 years ago. It is named because the wall winds up from the foot of the mountain, appearing on the ridge like an inverted Great Wall hanging in midair. You can climb along the Great Wall walkway to the highest watchtower and gaze into the distance, taking in the frontier scenery and the vast Gobi Desert. The Great Wall looks like a wandering dragon, stretching from east to west, sometimes broken, sometimes continuous, sometimes hidden, sometimes visible, extending for thousands of miles. Optional paid visit First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall: The westernmost beacon tower of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, about 10 meters high, standing on a 56-meter-high cliff by the Taolai River. After breakfast, go to visit Mogao Caves, one of China's four great grottoes. 【Mogao Caves】, also called the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, is praised as the "Treasure House of Eastern Art." It is the world's largest and richest existing site of Buddhist art and a witness to the blending of multiple civilizations on the ancient Silk Road. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987. The caves were carved over a thousand years and contain massive and rich remains such as murals, painted sculptures, and cave shrines, making it a world-famous treasure house of Buddhist art. After arriving at the Mogao Caves scenic area, you can first go to the Dunhuang Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center to watch a wonderful digital film - "Millennium Mogao" - to gain a preliminary understanding of the Mogao Caves. Then take a shuttle bus to the cave area (PS: photography is prohibited inside the caves). Under the guidance of a docent, visit 8 caves in sequence, such as the Library Cave (Caves 16~17, the largest cave), the Nine-Story Building (the common name for the wooden structure outside Cave 96, one of the landmark buildings of Mogao Caves), and the Nirvana Cave (Cave 148, where the reclining Buddha is located)... The specific caves visited depend on the actual situation on site, but several classic caves will be included. Among them, treasures worth close inspection include the Western Han hemp paper ink writing (one of China's earliest paper objects), the Northern Liang stone pagoda (a treasure of Buddhist art), and the 1:1 replica cave of Mogao Cave 45 (fully presenting High Tang murals and painted sculptures). In the afternoon, you will visit 【Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake】, praised as "one of China's five most beautiful deserts." Mingsha Mountain is formed by shifting sand, with peaks about a hundred meters high and steep slopes. The slopes have wave-like sand patterns. When people slide down from the top, it produces a bell-like musical sound, hence the name. It is said that when there is not a cloud in the sky and the wind stops and sand is still, one can even hear the sound of string and bamboo music, which is very marvelous. Crescent Lake, located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, is named for its shape like a crescent moon. The spring water is clear to the bottom. Despite years of strong winds and yellow sand blocking the sun, for thousands of years this clear spring has never overflowed after long rains nor dried up in drought. Here you can stroll in the desert and enjoy the beautiful scenes of "a solitary smoke rising straight in the vast desert, and the setting sun round over the long river" and "silver mountains surrounded by sand on four sides, a pool of clear water with green ripples." You can also choose various activities (at your own expense), such as camel riding, sand sliding, beach motorcycles, off-road vehicles, hang gliders... Afterwards, you can wander through Dunhuang Shazhou Night Market (optional) and taste authentic Dunhuang foods, such as apricot juice, donkey meat yellow noodles, pao'er yougao, braised lamb with flatbread, and red willow branch grilled lamb, etc. Notes 1.
